Liberal Leader Gerry Reid lost a squeaker in his home district of The Isles of Notre Dame on Tuesday night, in one of the most hotly contested races in Newfoundland and Labrador's election.
When all the votes were in, PC candidate Derrick Dalley defeated Reid by seven votes, taking 50.1 per cent of the popular vote in the two-candidate race.
The lead went back and forth as each of the 40 polls reported in. However, the outcome was not entirely determined by Tuesday's voters.
Advance, special and mail-in votes were the last ones counted, and when these were tabulated, the votes totalled:
- Derrick Dalley, 2,371 votes
- Gerry Reid, 2,364 votes
A margin of fewer than 10 votes triggers an automatic recount.
