They have a former cabinet minister stepping into the ring, but the Liberals are still heading into the final stretch of Newfoundland and Labrador's election campaign with an incomplete slate.
The Liberals have 47 candidates in the election, according to the official list of candidates released on Saturday evening by the office of the chief electoral officer.
The Liberals do not have a candidate nominated in the district of Placentia-St. Mary's, where Progressive Conservative incumbent Felix Collins won a byelection in February 2006.
Joining the Liberal slate is Rex Gibbons, a cabinet minister in the Clyde Wells era who is organizing the current Liberal campaign.
Gibbons, who represented St. John's between 1989 and 1997, is carrying the Liberal banner in St. John's South, where Tory Tom Osborne is the incumbent.
Gibbons is not the only party official competing in the Oct. 9 election. Liberal president Danny Dumaresque, also a former MHA, is running in Torngat Mountains.
The governing PCs completed their nominations in all 48 districts earlier this month.
The chief electoral officer reported that 36 candidates are running for the NDP. Leader Lorraine Michael said during Tuesday night's debate she hoped to have 37 names on her slate.
The Labrador party is running just one candidate — Jimmy Tuttauk, in Torngat Mountains. The party made headlines earlier this month when it announced it would not field candidates in Lake Melville and Labrador West, in order to help defeat Tory incumbents.
Three candidates are running as independents: Paul Perrier in Kilbride, Lionel Glover in Terra Nova and Fred Wilcox in Virginia Waters.
When the house of assembly was dissolved on Sept. 17, the PCs held 34 seats, the Liberals held 11, the NDP held one, and there were two vacancies.
