Just weeks after helping to found a new political party, a Conception Bay resident has declared himself as a New Democratic Party candidate in Newfoundland and Labrador's upcoming election.
Randy Dawe, who is representing the NDP in Port de Grave district, announced the formation earlier this month of the Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Party.
At the time, Dawe said the new party was needed to represent the concerns of small business owners and residents of rural communities.
Dawe said he believes the fledgling party and the NDP have a lot in common.
"It's by no means a quick flip," said Dawe. "I've always been a supporter of [the] NDP and NDP views and philosophy. It is a matter of sharing our resources."
Dawe said the fact he is running for another party is no indication that the Labour party — which does not yet have a leader — is dead on arrival.
Over the next few months, he said, the new party will try to broaden its appeal and to attract new members.
