The Liberals have made an election pledge to keep 13 highway depots in Newfoundland and Labrador open year-round.
Leader Gerry Reid, who made the announcement Wednesday during a campaign stop in central Newfoundland, said the current system — in which the depots operate seasonally — is not working.
Reid said roads are deteriorating and becoming dangerous because of Progressive Conservative government policy.
Reid criticized PC Leader Danny Williams — who, like Reid, campaigned in Reid's home district of the Isles of Notre Dame on Wednesday — for using a helicopter to visit voters.
"I was really looking forward to him driving down through Gander Bay into the Isles of Notre Dame in his bus because he would have realized then that something needed to be done to the roads," Reid said.
Meanwhile, the Liberals are also promising to change current snowclearing policy.
Snowplow operators are pulled off the roads between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., regardless of weather conditions.
The Liberals say equipment ought to be put back on the road in bad weather.
The Progressive Conservatives incorporated highway conditions into their platform.
The PCs say they will press the federal government "to follow through on supporting the maintenance and upgrading of all portions of the national highway system in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the Trans-Labrador Highway."
