Premier Danny Williams made a call on Monday for a byelection that is not expected to happen.
Williams, who is expected to drop the writ for the Oct. 9 general election by next Monday, said he was obligated to call a byelection for Baie Verte district, which has been vacant since Tory Paul Shelley resigned in July.

Under recent changes to the House of Assembly Act, a byelection must be called within 60 days of a seat becoming vacant.
Shelley — who left cabinet in January after announcing he would be retiring from politics — resigned his seat effective July 12.
A byelection must be held within 90 days of a vacancy.
However, with a general election scheduled for Oct. 9, the byelection call is effectively moot.
The writ for the election — the first to be held in the province under fixed-date legislation — must be dropped by Sept. 17.
"Once the writ is issued for the provincial general election, the byelection will no longer be in effect," the premier's office said in a statement.
Voters in the district will notice something else when they mark their ballots: the name of the district is changing to Baie Verte-Springdale. Under a recent redistribution, the district is picking up about 28 per cent of the soon-to-be-former district of Windsor-Springdale.
