2 die in Newfoundland shooting

Confrontation between neighbours escalated, police say

Last Updated: Tuesday, December 1, 2009 | 12:56 PM NT

Two men are dead after a dispute between neighbours escalated into a double shooting in the western Newfoundland town of Piccadilly.

The two dead men, aged 35 and 47, were next-door neighbours, police said.

RCMP Sgt. Wayne Newell said police were called to a home at 3:30 a.m. NT on Sunday, after someone reported hearing gunshots.

"One man died at the scene," Newell told CBC News. "The other succumbed to his injuries following transportation to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville."

Police said a confrontation between the two men, who they say knew each other, resulted in the shootings. At least one of the men had been drinking, and an autopsy will reveal whether the other man had also consumed alcohol, police said.

Police said a .303 rifle seized from the scene was a registered firearm that had been stored properly prior to the shooting.

A medical examiner will carry out autopsies to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
