Suspicious fire at Bell Island depot

Last Updated: Friday, November 20, 2009 | 12:12 PM NT

Someone broke into a government building on Bell Island, N.L., early Friday morning and attempted to burn the place down, police said.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze before it caused too much damage.

The RCMP said they received a call from the local fire department at about 5 a.m. reporting a fire at the Transportation and Works depot, where the provincial government stores its heavy machinery.

Bell Island is in Conception Bay about 25 kilometres west of St. John's.

Police said the investigation has revealed that different kinds of fuel were poured over the floor and on the vehicles that were in the building. A fire was then lit in the nearby kitchen area of the building, they said.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it spread, although there was some heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

Arson investigators are looking into the incident, and police are asking that anyone who might have information about the incident contact the RCMP.
