New president for Memorial?

An announcement is expected Wednesday regarding a new president for Newfoundland and Labrador's only university.

CBC News has confirmed that Memorial University of Newfoundland's senate held an emergency meeting Tuesday and has selected a male candidate. No other details were available.

MUN's board of regents also held a special meeting Tuesday evening.

The search for a candidate has been fraught with controversy for the past two years, including charges of political interference after provincial Education Minister Joan Burke admitted that she personally interviewed two candidates for the president's position and rejected them.

The lead candidate at one point was acting president Eddy Campbell, who has since moved on to run the University of New Brunswick.

MUN issued a news release Tuesday evening to say a news conference will be held at noon Wednesday.
