Police are looking for a western Newfoundland man, considered armed and dangerous, who they say pointed a gun at another man and fired it over his head.

The RCMP said Larry Hickey, 39, is wanted on charges of uttering threats, pointing a firearm and dangerous use of a weapon.

Police say the incident happened Wednesday in the tiny community of John's Beach, in the Bay of Islands, when Hickey's ex-wife and her boyfriend went to Hickey's house to get some of the woman's property.

Sgt. Wayne Newell told CBC News Thursday morning that police believe Hickey is dangerous.

"We know that he has a rifle and possibly some handguns," he said, "and we believe that he has them in his possession. We've been conducting an investigation and the info that we have received is that the guns may be with him."

Newell said police think Hickey is still in the Bay of Islands area.

He also is warning that if people are helping the fugitive, they could face charges themselves.
