Accused murderer appeals bail denial

Dates set for Ray Newman's preliminary inquiry on murder charge

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 | 10:40 AM NT

Lawyers for a St. John's man accused of murdering his former wife are appealing the decision to keep him in jail.

Ray Newman, 32, was denied bail during an appearance in Newfoundland Supreme Court in late September.

He was charged with second-degree murder during the summer, more than two years after Chrissy Predham-Newman was found with a slashed throat in her apartment in the east end of St. John's.

Predham-Newman had separated from her husband and was living in an apartment with her 18-month-old daughter when she was slain in January 2007.

Police said their investigation required painstaking laboratory work to identify and clear various DNA samples in Predham-Newman's apartment.

In the meantime, dates have been set for Newman's preliminary hearing.

The court has initially set aside nearly three weeks starting Feb. 2 to hear the evidence against Newman. However, lawyers have said previously they need a six to eight weeks to deal with the case.
