More suspicious fires in Seal Cove, Conception Bay

Last Updated: Monday, November 2, 2009 | 10:09 AM NT

Three fires in a span of 90 minutes on the weekend are raising suspicions in the small community of Seal Cove, in Conception Bay South, about 40 kilometres west of St. John's.

The fires overnight Saturday destroyed one home and damaged another nearby, while an abandoned bus was also burned.

There were no injuries.

Sylviane Andrews lives next door to the house that was destroyed.

"We were in the kitchen and the neighbour, the owner of the house, came pounding on the door and asked us to call 911," she said, "and that's when we noticed that there were flames coming out of the kitchen and the porch."

Police said the fires are being treated as suspicious.

It's not the first time there is concern that someone is deliberately setting fires in the community.

In September, residents gathered for a meeting to talk about their concerns after three suspicious fires in a week.

During that time, a house under construction was destroyed by fire, along with several vehicles and motorcycles on the same road.

Fire Chief Richard Murphy said at the time the fire was well advanced when firefighters arrived.

"It was a hot fire, there was a lot of vehicles in the area there," he said. "I guess they were scrapped vehicles … there were three or four vehicles in the basement, a couple of motorcycles and a pickup. So it was a lot of small explosions there with tires and air shocks … letting go."

That same week a house was damaged in a fire and a couple of days earlier there had been a tire fire on the same property.

Police have said in the past that there's no evidence that the fires, along with other unsolved suspicious fires in the region, are connected.
