3rd Moncton cab driver robbed

Last Updated: Thursday, November 5, 2009 | 9:09 PM AT

Another Moncton cab driver has been robbed, the third in less than a week, which has some drivers wondering how they can protect themselves.

The latest armed robbery occurred about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Cpl. Mike Gaudet of the Codiac Regional RCMP.

The 68-year-old driver picked up a man on Gordon Street and drove to Dufferin Street, where the passenger threatened him with a weapon and demanded money.

The suspect ran off with an undisclosed amount of money. The driver was not injured, Gaudet said.

The suspect is described as six feet tall, 170 pounds, and in his mid-20s.

On Oct. 31, another male cab driver was robbed after picking up a man in his mid-20s on Dufferin Street.

And on Oct. 30, shortly after 6 a.m., a female cab driver was robbed and assaulted. The suspect in that case is also in his 20s.

"No doubt it brings to light that there's three incidents of this nature," said Gaudet. "We're looking into the matter and we haven't determined at this point in time that they're related one way or the other, other than the victims all being cab drivers."

Susan Seaman drives a cab at night and has been robbed before.

She says she's not sure what drivers can do to protect themselves, other than installing barriers or cameras.

"I don't know what else, short of not driving at night and closing down the taxi system — there, no more robberies at night," she said.

"But anyway, we're not going to do that, none of us would want to do that, so we like to provide a service and we'd just like to have a safer work environment."

Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 857-2400, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
