The Liberals made small gains in New Brunswick's three main cities, but they were enough to help push them over the top.
Moncton:
The Liberals have doubled their seats in Moncton, going from one to two. The Conservatives won all of the seats but one in the Moncton area in 2003, with Mike Murphy of Moncton North being the lone Liberal MLA.
Murphy has been re-elected in Moncton North and will be joined by Bernard LeBlanc, who has won in Memramcook - Lakeville-Dieppe.
There are two Moncton-area cabinet ministers, Bruce Fitch and Joan MacAlpine Stiles. Fitch has been re-elected in Riverview and MacAlpine Stiles is leading in Moncton West.
Fredericton:
The Liberals are looking at increasing their seat total in the Fredericton area. The party is elected or leading in five seats. They won four ridings in the 2003 election.
NDP Leader Allison Brewer lost to Liberal Greg Byrne in Fredericton-Lincoln.
There are three Conservative cabinet ministers up for re-election in the Fredericton area. Jody Carr and Keith Ashfield have been re-elected. Brad Green was defeated.
Saint John:
The Liberals were elected or leading in six seats in the Saint John area, a gain of one over the 2003 election. The Conservatives won four of the 10 seats.
In 2003, the Tories won five seats, the Liberals four and the NDP one.
In the spring byelection, Liberal Ed Doherty won Saint John Harbour, easily defeating Progressive Conservative candidate Michelle Hooton and NDP candidate Dan Robichaud.
It had been the only NDP seat in the province, held by Elizabeth Weir since 1991.
There were two cabinet ministers running for re-election from the Saint John area. Trevor Holder from Saint John Portland was re-elected and Brenda Fowlie from Quispamsis was defeated.
Voter turnout in the cities is up since the last election — three per cent in Saint John, four per cent in Moncton and 2.5 per cent in Fredericton.
