The Outaouais region in west Quebec has reported its first death from swine flu.
A 26-year-old woman with a chronic medical condition died Saturday night at a health centre after contracting the virus, according to Outaouais public health officials.
The region has had 221 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza since the second wave of the swine flu pandemic began. Of those, 24 people have been hospitalized.
The Outaouais region has received 60,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine, and health officials say that if priority protocols are respected, all high-risk patients will be vaccinated.
As of 11 a.m. ET Monday, Gatineau's two swine flu vaccination clinics were still accepting women more than 20 weeks pregnant, and children between six months and five years old for vaccinations.
According to Gatineau public health, 400 tickets were available at the clinic at Les Promenades de l'Outaouais shopping centre, and there were an additional 150 tickets at the clinic on Montée Paiement.
Health officials also hope to open a vaccination clinic in Aylmer as early as this week. There are also plans to open flu clinics, to keep anyone with H1N1 symptoms out of emergency room waiting areas and doctors' offices.
