(CBC)His two closest rivals — former municipal councillor Aurèle Desjardins and former Canadian Police Association president Tony Cannivino — earned 27 and 25 per cent of the vote, respectively.

The three remaining candidates — Luc Desjardins, Richard Gravel and Roger Fleury — divided the rest of the votes.

Bureau finished the campaign with a comfortable lead, even though it was smaller than his margin of victory in 2005, when he was elected with nearly 70 per cent of the vote.

Desjardins told his supporters he would take some time to reflect on his next professional move but hinted it wouldn't be in the political sphere.

Public transit was a big campaign issue in Gatineau as were the city's negotiations with its fire and police departments.

Initial reports suggest the voter participation rate was nearly 29 per cent, including advance polling results.

That is lower than the 2005 turnout when 47.87 per cent of voters cast ballots in Gatineau.
