An elderly Montreal man is in critical condition in hospital after a teenage Good Samaritan rescued him from a car that plunged into a backyard pool near Cavendish Mall in the suburb of Côte Saint-Luc.
The man's car sank in this backyard swimming pool. (CBC)The man, 86, was in the mall parking lot around 4 p.m. Sunday when he likely suffered a heart attack or some other medical emergency that caused him to press the gas pedal, said Montreal Police Const. Olivier Lapointe.
The man careened through the parking lot, accelerating toward a nearby fence that enclosed a backyard swimming pool.
He crashed through the fence, and his car fell into the pool.
The bizarre accident was witnessed by a passing teen, who rushed to the side of the pool and, with the help of a neighbour, broke one of the vehicle's side windows, Lapointe said.
The 17-year-old dove into the freezing water and was able to get the man out of the car and perform CPR, Lapointe said.
Emergency workers rushed the man to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The man's wife was in the shopping mall at the time of the accident.
The pool had to be emptied to remove the car. No one else was hurt in the incident.
