After a 15-hour standoff with a SWAT team, an armed man quiety surrendered Tuesday afternoon at an apartment in Laval, north of Montreal, and more than a dozen residents of the area were allowed to go home.
Police said the confrontation started Monday night when the man had an argument with his nephew, who was visiting from Italy.
"The gentleman pulls out a gun and puts it on the kitchen table," said Laval police Const. Franco Di Genova.
"The nephew … grabs his coat and runs outside, and calls [the man's] son. His son in turn calls us," Di Genova said.
Police spent all night and morning trying to persuade the man by telephone to leave his apartment, and he finally did.
