Philippe Couillard will run in Quebec City

Last Updated: Monday, February 12, 2007 | 10:26 AM ET

Quebec Health Minister Philippe Couillard is leaving his Montreal constituency to run in Quebec City's Jean-Talon riding in the upcoming provincial election.

Couillard is the MNA for Mount Royal riding, a Liberal stronghold in Montreal's northwest region.

Marguerite Delisle, who represents Jean-Talon, is leaving politics for health reasons. She took sick leave in September because of rheumatoid arthritis.

Replacing her with a candidate of Couillard's standing sends a strong message to Quebec City, said Premier Jean Charest.

"Philippe has played a key role in the government in the last four years and he will be a great addition to a strong team who has done exceptional work," he said Sunday.

Couillard has indicated he wants a riding closer to his family, who moved to Quebec City after the 2003 election.

The Jean-Talon riding is also a Liberal fortress.

Voters in the Quebec City riding have elected a Liberal MNA since 1966. The riding includes l'Université Laval.
