A fire ravaged a high school in the Rosemont district of Montreal Thursday night, destroying the building and displacing some 1,200 students expected to return to class in January.
The cause of the fire at Père-Marquette high school has not yet been revealed, but it is not believed to be criminal in origin.
About 40 people were reportedly inside the building at the time the fire began, but all managed to flee unharmed.
By the time crews put out the fire, the damage had already been done and the school nearly destroyed.
For the time being, officials from the Montreal School Commission will have some buffer time from the winter holiday break to devise a plan for relocating the students. School was set to begin Jan. 8.
About 1,200 students attend Père-Marquette, and another 250 students take special woodworking classes there.
