The adjuvanted form of the H1N1 vaccine is expected to run out at Winnipeg's 12 vaccination clinics. (CBC)Swine flu vaccine clinics in Winnipeg ran out of one type of vaccine dose on Friday.
A spokesperson for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) said the H1N1 vaccine with adjuvant — an additive that boost the vaccine's effectiveness — has been used up.
But Heidi Graham said the health region is expecting to receive a new vaccine shipment early next week.
In the meantime, the region is planning to keep its 12 clinics open and offer the vaccine without adjuvant instead. Both types of vaccine target the H1N1 influenza A virus that causes swine flu.
Initially intended only for pregnant women, the non-adjuvanted dose is safe and effective for other people as well, said Dr. Sande Harlos, the WRHA medical officer of health.
Anyone between the ages of 10 and 65 who does not have compromised immune systems will be allowed to have that shot.
Anyone who falls outside of those parameters will need to wait until the new shipment of the vaccine with adjuvant arrives next week.
As of 10:30 a.m. on Friday, a total of 165,596 people had been given the vaccine at the WRHA clinics since the mass immunization campaign started on Oct. 26.
In all, more than 270,000 vaccinations have been administered by regional health authorities across Manitoba.
The 12 clinics operated by the WRHA are open Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Locations are on the map below.
As well, two special weekend clinics will be open on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.:
- University of Manitoba, multipurpose room 210, 2nd floor, University Centre.
- Holy Eucharist Parish Hall, 460 Munroe Ave.
