2 men arrested for theft, fraud

Last Updated: Friday, November 20, 2009 | 2:44 PM CT

Two men have been charged with theft and fraud after numerous vehicles were broken into across Winnipeg and surrounding rural areas.

Personal property, including electronics, purses, wallets and credit cards, were stolen during the break-ins, which happened between Aug. 9 and Nov. 18, police said.

A number of vehicles and licence plates were also stolen, police said.

Many of the credit cards were used to purchase merchandise and gift cards at retail stores. The gift cards were then sold for profit, police said.

Troy Michael Courchene, 46, of Winnipeg was charged with 29 counts, including theft, possession of break-in equipment and failure to comply with a previous court order. He is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

A 52-year-old man, whose name was not released, has been charged with 21 counts, including theft and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court later.
