New water park proposal surfaces in Winnipeg

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 | 11:18 AM CT

A new deal for a water park in Winnipeg could be in the works at City Hall, CBC News has learned.

City councillors were summoned to a meeting Monday afternoon where they were required to sign confidentiality agreements.

But sources told CBC News that councillors were told at the meeting that a proponent for a water park has stepped forward. They were not told, however, who it is.

According to a source close to the matter, the land being considered for construction of the proposed park is currently owned by the city and would have to be declared surplus then sold.

The land is in the vicinity of The Forks market in downtown, CBC News was told.

An earlier deal to build an indoor water park with the city contributing $7 million fell through this spring when the proponent, Canad Inns, pulled the plug.

Their proposal included 100 new rooms for the existing Canad Inns hotel at Polo Park, and a 66,000-square-foot indoor water park that would include a wave pool, lazy river, family whirlpool, adult whirlpool, children's activity pool, inner-tube slides, water roller-coaster, bowl waterslide and surf ride.

No explanation was provided as to why the company backed out. In a statement, the company simply said it was no longer in a position to move forward on the park.
