Pair charged in downtown robberies

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a series of robberies in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday night.

According to police, a man, 49, was assaulted by three men at about 9 p.m. near Portage Avenue and Fort Street. The men took personal property and fled the area. The victim received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.

About 45 minutes later, a man, 24, was confronted by three men near Main Street and McDermot Avenue. The robbers indicated they had a gun and robbed him of personal property, police said.

The victim was not injured.

At 10 p.m., a man, 23, was approached by three men in the area of Bannatyne Avenue and McDermot Avenue. They demanded money but when the victim indicated he didn't have any, the robbers assaulted him and then fled, police said.

The victim did not require medical attention.

Just five minutes later, at 10:05 p.m., a man, 59, was assaulted and robbed of personal property by two men in the area of Albert Street and Bannatyne Avenue.

The victim did not require medical attention for his injuries, police said.

A 22-year-old man was arrested shortly afterward and charged with four counts of robbery, as well as uttering threats and failing to comply with the conditions of an court-imposed undertaking. He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

A second man, 21, was arrested shortly before midnight and charged with four counts of robbery as well as failing to comply with an undertaking. He has also been detained at the remand centre.

A further arrest is pending, police said.

The names of the men arrested have not been released by police.
