Man. teacher accused of sexually assaulting student

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 | 2:04 PM CT

A teacher at a school on Manitoba's Waywayseecappo First Nation has been charged with sexually assaulting a female student, RCMP said Tuesday.

The male teacher was arrested following a week-long investigation that began on Oct. 22, police said.

A student approached police to say she was sexually assaulted by a teacher at Waywayseecappo Community School on two separate days last month, Sgt. Crystal Welcher said.

The teacher was charged on Oct. 30 with two counts of sexual interference, police said.

He was released from police custody on a promise to appear in court in Waywayseecappo on Dec. 9.

Welcher said the conditions of the teacher's release are strict and include an order to not be in the company of any child under 16 without another adult present.

Police withheld the alleged victim's name, age and home community to safeguard her identity, but the conditions of the accused's release suggest she is younger than 16.

RCMP are asking anyone with additional information to contact police or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Waywayseecappo is located approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, near the Manitoba–Saskatchewan border.
