Man accused of confining, sexually abusing 2 females

Last Updated: Monday, November 2, 2009 | 1:36 PM CT

A 44-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement in a case police described as "very, very disturbing."

Police said a 16-year-old girl and 24-year-old woman were visiting the man at his residence in the Charleswood area of Winnipeg on Oct. 29.

The 24-year-old had met the man via the internet just four weeks earlier, police said.

At some point during the visit, the man accused the pair of stealing property from him and prevented them from leaving his residence. Over several hours, he threatened the females and committed sexual assaults against both, police said.

One of the victims was eventually able to free herself and access the man's computer to alert a friend about what was happening.

The friend then called police, who had to force their way into the residence when the man refused to allow officers entry.

"It's a very, very disturbing sexual assault. It's something that is definitely out of the norm for sexual assaults that we'll normally see," said police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput.

The females were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Oubay Ismail Chebib was arrested at the scene and is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

The investigation is continuing and further charges are expected, police said.

Chaput said the police service would like to remind people of the dangers of communicating with strangers via the internet. Police are also using the opportunity to advise people to be vigilant when meeting new acquaintances.

"Meetings should be in a public place and you should be in the company of others," police suggest.

Additional information regarding internet safety can be found on the Winnipeg Police Service website.
