An East St. Paul, Man., couple escaped without injury when their home was gutted by fire Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to 694 Pritchard Farm Rd. at about 1:30 p.m. CT., police said.

The couple living in the two-storey house were inside when the fire started. They acted quickly after smelling smoke coming from the area of the garage, RCMP Sgt. Mike Van Katz said.

"They were in the living room, they smelled smoke, they looked in the garage, saw the flames and immediately left the house, went to the neighbours and called the fire department," he said.

Van Katz commended the couple for acting so quickly to get to safety..

RCMP said the damage is extensive and the home and a vehicle in the garage are likely to be written off. No monetary estimate of the damage was available.

An investigation is underway to determine what started the fire.

East St. Paul is on the northern outskirts of Winnipeg.
