Tablets of OxyContin seized at the Winnipeg airport were put on display by the RCMP on Monday. (RCMP)Two men were arrested after border officials seized 1,009 tablets of OxyContin at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg.
According to RCMP, the prescription painkiller was discovered by officials with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on Oct. 26. The tablets were part of a shipment awaiting clearance for entry into Canada, RCMP said.
OxyContin is sometimes crushed and snorted by addicts.
The CBSA officials have turned the pills over to the RCMP for further investigation.
RCMP officers then arrested a 23-year-old and a 27-year-old, both from Winnipeg.
The men are facing drug charges and are expected within the next few days to be formally charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, police said.
Both have been released from custody on a promise to appear in Winnipeg provincial court on Dec. 17.
The investigation is continuing, RCMP said.
