A bill to protect Alberta fire departments from lawsuits passed its third and final reading in the legislature Wednesday afternoon and will be proclaimed into law later this fall.
The bill was sponsored by Edmonton Castle Downs MLA Thomas Lukaszuk.
"As of the passage of this bill this afternoon, no municipal fire department or firefighter could be sued," said Lukaszuk, "which means nobody will be second-guessing the decision they are making under emergency situations."
Bill 49 will shield municipal fire departments and firefighters from claims launched by clients of insurance companies looking to recover losses from fire damage.
