Weapons charges in Camrose, Alta., standoff

The man arrested after an armed standoff with police Oct. 29 in Camrose, Alta., now faces 13 additional charges, police said Wednesday.
Police say 30 shots were fired during a standoff in Camrose, Alta., Oct 29. (CBC)Police surrounded a home in Camrose —which is located 90 kilometres southeast of Edmonton — as part of their investigation of a drug store robbery earlier in the week.
The person inside the home fired more than 30 shots from a high-powered rifle before he was arrested several hours later, police said.
Charles Daniel Nadeau, 31, was initially charged with robbery. He now faces 13 other charges, including five counts of possessing a prohibited device, specifically magazines that contained more bullets than the weapons were designed to hold.
"The magazines that we seized during this situation varied in size from 15 for a handgun and as much as 30 for the Colt AR-15 [semi-automatic rifle]," said Insp. Lee Foreman.
"Obviously, you can cover a large area quite effectively and put out a lot of bullets in a very short period of time," said Foreman. "So one shot is dangerous, but when you can fire off 30 in matter of seconds, obviously it's extremely dangerous as well."
Police say the standoff ended when Nadeau shot himself with a pistol. He remains in hospital in stable condition.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Camrose on Nov. 18th.
