Police cordoned off a neighbourhood in Camrose, Alta., Thursday during a standoff with an armed man. (CBC)A Camrose man is facing charges after a day-long armed standoff that ended after he allegedly shot himself in the chest late Thursday afternoon.
Charles Daniel Nadeau, 31, has already been charged with robbery. He also faces charges including reckless discharge of a firearm and assault with a weapon, Camrose police Insp. Lee Foreman said.
Camrose police first went to a house in a residential area of the city on Thursday morning. They were investigating an incident Tuesday night in which a man who said he had a gun demanded narcotics from a local Shoppers Drug Mart.
After discovering their suspect had several guns registered to him, Camrose police decided to call in the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Foreman said.
Shortly after the RCMP arrived, several gunshots were fired from within the house. Police decided to evacuate several homes in the area as a precaution.
"I know that at least one bullet passed through the house across the alley and went across the cul de sac and into a house across the street and through the wall," Foreman said, adding the bullet came from a high-powered, semi-automatic rifle.
Over the course of the afternoon, police talked to the man and tried to convince him to surrender. At about 4:30 p.m., a single gunshot was heard in the house.
The man was found inside with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said. He remained in hospital Friday in stable condition.
After the arrest, police found three handguns and six long guns inside the house, Foreman said.
"Some of those firearms were, in fact, loaded when we entered the residence" he said. "That's why we dealt with it in such a serious manner."
