A former teacher who admitted having sex with a 14-year-old female student in Spruce Grove, Alta., has apologized in court and will be sentenced next Tuesday.
Brian Nickel, 45, pleaded guilty in July to sexual interference, making child pornography and possessing child pornography.
During his sentencing hearing Tuesday, the Crown called for a six-year prison term. Nickel's lawyer said he should receive 30 months in jail.
Nickel read a statement of apology to his victim, his family and the staff of St. Marguerite Catholic School.
According to an agreed statement of facts presented in court last summer, the girl was a student who kept in touch with Nickel. They met in person and communicated using email, instant messages and text messages, and developed a relationship.
Nickel gave the girl a camera so she could make a video of herself in the shower, and they performed oral sex on each other in a classroom at the school.
The court also heard Tuesday that Nickel used a hidden camera under his classroom desk to film female students sitting down at their desks.
Nickel admitted to having eight videos and 847 pictures of child pornography on his computer.
