Maciocia to return as Eskimos' coach

Danny Maciocia's job is safe but three assistants have been jettisoned after the Edmonton Eskimos missed the CFL playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine, offensive line coach Carl Brennan and Scott Squires, the special teams coach, were fired on Tuesday. All three completed just one season with the club, with Chapdelaine joining after serving as offensive coordinator for the 2006 Grey Cup champion B.C. Lions.

Edmonton went 5-12-1 this season and missed the playoffs for a second straight year, the first time that has happened to the franchise in more than 40 years. The team won just once in 10 games against its CFL West rivals.

The Eskimos ended the season with six straight losses, with backup Stefan LeFors struggling after star quarterback Ricky Ray was lost for the season in September with a shoulder injury.

The Edmonton offence produced 371 points — sixth in the CFL — despite ranking third in time of possession. Edmonton scored 34 offensive touchdowns and just six from the running game, numbers that ranked only ahead of the lowly Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Protection was also a concern, with 52 sacks allowed, the second worst total in the league.

Maciocia, 40, will stay on as head coach and director of football operations. Maciocia coached Edmonton to the 2005 Grey Cup, his first season, but now has a 23-30-1 record overall.

He joined the Eskimos three years earlier, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach before being promoted.

The club also announced on Tuesday that Canadians Aaron Fiacconi and Agustin Barrenechea, both acquired in the second half of the season, were re-signed. Offensive lineman Fiacconi came over in a trade from Winnipeg, while linebacker Barrenechea picked up in a deal with Hamilton.
