In what's been dubbed a first for the NHL and the North, Yellowknifers will get to see young NHL players in action this fall when the Edmonton Oilers take their rookie camp to the Northwest Territories.
The NHL franchise will be in town Sept. 6-9, holding three on-ice sessions at the Yellowknife Multiplex Arena. The team said in a release issued Friday hockey fans can expect to see top prospects such as Andrew Cogliano, Theo Peckham and Vyacheslav Trukhno prepare for the 2007-08 NHL season.
"This is a first for the Edmonton Oilers, a first for the NHL, and a first for hockey fans in the Northwest Territories," Oilers president Patrick LaForge said Friday in a release.
Officials from the team were supposed to hold a news conference in Yellowknife on Friday, but flight issues from Edmonton resulted in it being cancelled.
Tickets for the on-ice sessions will go on sale May 28 at the Top of the World travel agency in Yellowknife. Tickets will cost $5 for each session.
The Oilers will also hold a fundraising dinner on Sept. 8 in support of Facilities For Kids and KidSport.
