Family members have confirmed that a body discovered Tuesday morning in Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River is that of a university student missing for nine days.
Robert Barrington Leigh, 20, disappeared Aug. 13 while visiting family in Edmonton.
His body was identified by police Tuesday afternoon, Barrington Leigh's family said in a posting on their website.
Edmonton police spokeswoman Lisa Lammi confirmed that a body had been found on the north side of the river by the crew of a City of Edmonton water and sanitation boat.
She said a number of pieces of identification had been found with the body, including a driver's licence.
The body was taken to the medical examiner's office and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
"At this time we need to get dental records to positively ID this individual, but foul play is not suspected," Lammi said. "The investigation is continuing … until the results of that autopsy are found."
Barrington Leigh, considered one of the top mathematical minds in North America, hadn't been seen since he cycled to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival to meet some friends.
Police had been searching the Saskatchewan River valley, as well as Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto, where he was a student at the University of Toronto.
The family of Barrington Leigh plans to hold a vigil for the community and volunteers who helped in the search. It will take place Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. in Edmonton's Queen Elizabeth Park.
