A former Calgary man who plowed a van into a crowd four years ago, killing a 24-year-old woman and injuring two others has been removed from Canada, federal officials say.
Samrat Dhuna, 22, was convicted of manslaughter for driving the wrong way down a one-way street and smashing into a group of people on New Year's Eve 2006, killing bank worker Raminder Dhadda. Two of her friends were critically injured.
Dhuna was found guilty on eight of 12 charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and hit and run.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews confirmed Thursday Dhuna was deported to his native India on Monday, and is permanently barred from returning to Canada.
He had been serving a 10-year prison sentence, but was recently granted day parole.
"We will not tolerate those who come to this country and commit violent crimes. This government is committed to protecting the safety and security of Canadians," he said, praising Canadian border and immigration officials for their roles in the process.
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney added: "The removal of violent foreign criminals is key to maintaining the integrity of Canada's immigration system and protecting Canadians."
