Last Updated: Saturday, October 31, 2009 | 3:54 PM MT

One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a car crashed into a snowplow in northeastern Alberta on Saturday morning.

In a written release, police said icy roads were likely a factor in the crash, which happened at about 10 a.m. on Highway 41, near Bonnyville, about 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

The driver of a car carrying four people lost control and the vehicle slid across the centre line and crashed into the snowplow.

The man driving the car was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A male passenger was taken to hospital in Edmonton, where he remains in critical condition.

An 18-year-old female passenger and her three-year-old son were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The snowplow driver was not hurt but police say he was very shaken up.

Bonnyville RCMP are investigating.
