Liberal Darshan Kang unseated Shiraz Shariff, who served four terms as a Tory MLA, in the spring provincial election. (Alberta Liberals)The rookie Liberal MLA for Calgary-McCall has been ordered to take medical leave for three months.
Darshan Kang, 57, was taken to the hospital last week, suffering from chest pains, said Liberal staffer James Maxim on Wednesday.
A doctor told Kang to take three months off from his position to deal with an unspecified heart condition, said Maxim. He said Kang will likely undergo an operation but he hasn't heard yet what type of procedure.
Kang's office will remain open to serve constituents, and other Liberal MLAs will take over Kang's responsibilities as transportation, Service Alberta and sustainable resource development critic.
The realtor is expected to return to his job in mid-January, pending clearance from his doctor.
Kang unseated Shiraz Shariff, who served four terms as a Tory MLA, by 118 votes in the March 3 provincial election.
