Veteran Alberta MP won't run again in next election

Conservative MP Art Hanger, who was once suspended from caucus for criticizing his party's leader, said Wednesday he will not run again in the next federal election.
Hanger, 64, was first elected to represent the riding of Calgary Northeast in 1993 as one of the original members of the Reform party.

He went on to be re-elected four times, including once under the Canadian Alliance banner, and most recently in 2006 for what was then the new federal Conservative party.
Hanger was one of Stockwell Day's harshest critics when Day headed the Canadian Alliance, and was suspended from caucus in 2001 when he openly called for Day to step down as leader.
Hanger, a former police officer, is currently chairman of the House of Commons standing committee on justice and human rights.
While on the opposition benches, he was named to several critic portfolios, including citizenship and immigration, and national defence.
