A Red Deer man will spend 30 months in jail for making child pornography thanks to a burglar who tipped off police.
William Alexander Mitchell, 47, was sentenced by a provincial court judge Friday morning after pleading guilty to a charge of making child pornography.
Mitchell was charged in October 2005 after someone broke into his house and stole a video camera.
According to an agreed-upon statement of facts, after the break-in, police were tipped off about a tape with child porn images on it that had been left on the steps of a church.
Police found a note with the address of the home and viewed the tape, discovering the burglar had filmed a computer monitor with images of child porn.
Const. Kathy Deheer with Red Deer RCMP said Friday police appreciate any tips they get about crimes.
"But when it involves children and pornography and exploitation of children we're extremely grateful when people come forward."
The burglar has not been caught.
