Two Vancouver police officers are recovering from head injuries after a violent struggle on Commercial Drive with a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

Police received several 911 calls on Wednesday afternoon about a man randomly punching people near the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station, Const. Jana McGuinness said Thursday.

The two officers found the man in a coffee shop and told him they were taking him into custody. Once the officers got him outside, the man punched a female officer in the face and ran away, McGuinness said.

Both officers gave chase and were able to catch up with the man. More punches were exchanged and the man was eventually subdued and placed under arrest, police said.

The officers were treated for "significant head and facial bruising." The man they arrested was not injured.

Aija Louis Richardson, 27, of Vancouver, is facing two counts of assaulting a peace officer.

Richardson was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large on an assault charge at the time of his arrest.
