Vancouver Island flood warnings lifted

The flood warnings issued for several rivers on Vancouver Island have ended, after the heavy rain forecast for the region never arrived.

B.C.'s River Forecast Centre ended its flood warnings for the Cowichan River, Koksilah River, Gold River, Heber River and Tahsis and Zeballos areas at 6 a.m. Thursday.

A flood watch was also ended for other rivers on central and eastern Vancouver Island, and river levels are expected to fall for the next 48 hours.

The centre said the weather system that caused rivers on the west coast of Vancouver Island to reach peak level on Wednesday was pushed south into the United States, reducing rain on Vancouver Island.

Local temperatures were also cooling, which stopped the snow in the mountains from melting from the rain.

The end of the flood warning was good news for residents of the North Cowichan region, where 300 homes were evacuated on Friday after heavy rains, melting snow and high tides caused two local rivers to overflow.
