Man killed in Toronto was accused of importing drugs

A warrant had been issued in California for Shane Kelter, 32, accused of trafficking drugs between Canada and the U.S. (Toronto Police Service)

A Vancouver man gunned down over the weekend in downtown Toronto had gang connections and was under indictment in the United States on drug charges, police said.

Shane Kelter, 32, was shot and killed at around 3 a.m. ET Sunday outside a condominium near Wellesley Street West and Bay Street.

Kelter had connections to a gang in Vancouver, police said Tuesday. He was indicted in California last year along with five other Canadians on a list of drug charges.

Police in California said the group imported ecstasy and marijuana to the U.S. and shipped cocaine to Canada.

A warrant was out for his arrest in the state, and extradition talks were ongoing between U.S. and Canadian officials, the U.S. Attorney's Office told the Toronto Star.

Toronto police said they still don't know why Kelter was killed.
