Man shot by Mountie in central B.C.

Last Updated: Sunday, November 22, 2009 | 11:04 AM PT

A 24-year-old man is in hospital in serious but stable condition after he was shot by a Mountie in central B.C. Saturday afternoon.

Police say the officer pulled over a truck matching the description of a stolen vehicle on Highway 16 in Smithers near Tatlow Road at approximately 12:30 p.m. PT.

Const. Craig Douglass of North District RCMP said the officer fired his weapon because he believed his life was in jeopardy as he tried to get the driver out of the truck.

"While attempting to remove the driver of the truck, the vehicle accelerated, dragging the officer … The officer discharged his firearm and the driver of the vehicle was struck," Douglass said.

The driver was taken to a hospital in Vancouver, in serious but stable condition.

Police say the investigation is still in its early stages. The number of shots fired and the extent of the driver's injuries have not yet been determined.

In a written release, the RCMP said a senior officer from the Saanich Police Department, on Vancouver Island, will lead the investigation in Smithers.

The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP has been advised of the shooting, police said, and will provide a civilian monitor of the police investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting, or has any information on the incident, is asked to call the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Corrections and Clarifications
