A man is in police custody and facing charges after allegedly going on a stabbing rampage in Vancouver on Saturday evening.

Police say the attacks started at the busy intersection of East Broadway and Commercial Drive just after 6 p.m. when a man was stabbed in the back at a bus stop.

Over the next half hour, the suspect allegedly ran through several blocks, stabbing four more men at random.

Police allege the man tried to get away by unsuccessfully attempting to carjack a vehicle.

Meanwhile, witnesses to the fifth stabbing had called 911 and chased the suspect on foot until Vancouver police officers caught up with him a few minutes later.

A 30-year-old man, who is known to police, was taken into custody.

"All options remain on the table as far as a motive and certainly our investigators and Crown staff will be looking at, you know, any reason why this guy may have done this," said Const. Lindsay Houghton.

He said the suspect is facing multiple charges of assault with a weapon.

All victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and have been treated in hospital.
