Foster parents under investigation in possible 'shaken baby' case

A 10-week-old baby from Vancouver Island is in critical condition after suffering suspicious head and brain injuries that police say are consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The baby's foster parents called paramedics Wednesday after they found the child struggling to breathe.

They are now under investigation after social workers contacted police after a medical examination of the child.

Saanich police say the child's foster parents have been co-operating.

"Police obviously have a lot of work to do, trying to trace the preceding 12 hours back to see who came into contact with the child and how the injury may have been sustained," said Det. Paul Brailey.

"The baby's in critical condition and we're working day to day at this moment in time."

Brailey said the Ministry of Children and Families has removed several other foster children from the child's home.

When contacted by CBC News, the ministry said it would not comment directly on the case, citing privacy issues.

It is unclear how long the baby had been in the couple's care.
