15 young artists named semi-finalists in Canadian Painting Competition

Young painters from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Oakville and Fredericton have been named as finalists in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition.

They were chosen from more than 600 artists across the country who submitted work. All the artists are in the first five years of their careers.

Winners will be picked from three regions before a national winner is chosen in September.

The semifinalists from Western Canada are:

  • Eli Bornowsky of Vancouver.
  • Andrew Dadson of Vancouver.
  • Jeremy Hof of Vancouver.
  • Collin Johanson of Vancouver.
  • Lorenzo Pepito of Vancouver.

The semi-finalists from central Canada are:

  • Martin Golland of Toronto.
  • Sarah Jane Gorlitz of Toronto.
  • Amanda Reeves of Oakville.
  • Drew Simpson of Toronto.
  • Emmy Skensved of Toronto.

The semi-finalists from Eastern Canada are:

  • Patrick Howlett of Fredericton.
  • Rick Leong of Montreal.
  • Wil Murray of Montreal.
  • Jeanie Riddle of Montreal.
  • Justin Stephens of Montreal.

The annual competition has a first prize of $25,000 and two other artists earn honourable mentions and $15,000 each. Their work becomes part of the Royal Bank's art collection.

The 12 remaining finalists earn $7,500 each and their work will be donated to the Canadiana Fund Crown Collection, which is displayed in official residences and government buildings.

All their works will be shown on a cross-Canada tour that will stop in Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon, Edmonton, St. John's, N.L., London, Ont., Toronto and Vancouver between now and December.
