A North Vancouver high school student died after trying to climb up on a school rooftop Friday morning to watch the sunrise.
Sadie Hardman, 17, died Friday afternoon at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver from head injuries sustained in the fall, police said.
Cpl. Randall Wong of the North Vancouver RCMP said Hardman and some friends had been up all night and decided to climb on top of the Upper Lynn Valley Elementary School to watch the sunrise, but Hardman fell while attempting to climb onto the roof.
The rooftop was a popular place for young people to hang out, said Wong, despite efforts by the school board to prevent people from climbing up by erecting a chain-link fence.
Hardman was a model student at North Vancouver's Argyle Secondary School and sat on student council for many years, said principal Olga Woodland.
"This just seems to be a freak accident," said Woodland.
Counsellors will be available to students starting Monday at the high school.
