Inconvenient Truth raises questions in B.C. school district

A Surrey school trustee has put forward a motion asking that the The Great Global Warming Swindle be distributed as a companion to Al Gore's global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

Free DVDs of the Gore film have been being offered to Surrey schools by a charitable foundation.

The school board had reminded teachers last week that they couldn't show the documentary until it had been approved by a teachers' committee, something which has now happened.

Trustees will vote on the motion to provide an alternative point of view to An Inconvenient Truth in two weeks.

Trustee Heather Stilwell, who brought forward the motion, said she's not sold on the former U.S. vice-president's theory of global warming.

"I am not sure. I mean I see evidence. I think there is climate change, there's no question about that. Whether what Al Gore says about it is the truth, I have questions."

Stilwell said if the documentary is shown to kids in Surrey classrooms, then teachers should provide alternative theories on climate change.

Jinny Sims, the president of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, said showing the film shouldn't even be an issue, calling Stilwell's motion "heavy handed."

"I've certainly seen the DVD, and for me it's a good tool to use in the classroom about what is happening, and I am sure teachers would use it appropriately."
