Green party Leader Jane Sterk has been defeated in her home riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads, CBC News projects.
With about 20 per cent of the votes counted in the Vancouver Island riding, Sterk had captured only 18 per cent of the vote.
New Democrat Maurine Karagianis took over 50 per cent of the vote to win the riding.
Liberal Carl Edward Ratsoy finished second, taking just over 30 per cent of the ballots.
Sterk, a former Esquimalt town councillor, previously ran for the Greens in the 2004 federal election and the 2005 provincial election but remains a relative political unknown in B.C.
She became Green leader in 2009 following the departure of high-profile environmental activist Adriane Carr, who raised the B.C. Greens from a marginal party to a viable option.
