Jane Sterk, leader of the Green Party of B.C., concedes defeat in her riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads. (CBC)Election night was sobering for the Green Party of B.C. — not a single candidate managed to capture a seat in the provincial legislature.
The party’s leader, Jane Sterk, finished third in her riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads, capturing 17 per cent of the popular vote.
The riding was won by NDP candidate Maurine Karagianis, who took 53 per cent of the vote. Liberal Carl Edward Ratsoy received 30 per cent of the ballots.
Overall, the Green party received about eight per cent of the popular vote in the province, down slightly from the 2005 election.
The Greens didn’t manage to finish second in any ridings but did score double-digit support in 23 ridings.
Their biggest support came in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, where they captured 21 per cent of the vote, behind the Liberals at 54 per cent and the NDP at 25 per cent.
Support for the Greens was also notable in Penticton, where they tallied 16 per cent of the vote, and Vernon-Monashee, where they got 18 per cent.
The party also took 14 per cent of the vote in Shuswap.
